Each Monday at 930am, I’ll be guiding you through all the essential tricks required to create amazing comics: Storytelling techniques, drawing and illustration tricks, character design, sequencing, movement, setting, mood, speech, sound, lettering, costume, clarity of communication, and more! High energy fun and creativity is guaranteed!

If you attended the previous comic courses – these workshops will be totally fresh! Where we cover similar territory as before it will be with a completely different approach… For example, a different set of faces/expressions and moods… or a different set of dynamic expressive poses, exploring a different front cover composition, a different kind of comic strip story with a different ‘classic’ narrative type etc! The spectrum of drawing and storytelling skills of the young artists will be infinitely broadened to the farthest limits of the imagination!!!

This is an example course structure to give an idea of how things run, but will change according to the whim’s of the artists’ imaginations!

Week 1 – – Creating Cartoon Creatures… and bringing them to life, using classic animal characters as our inspiration!
Week 2 – – Classic characters – Learn design and stylistic tricks used by the greats! World-famous cartoon characters! 
Week 3 – – Faces and Expressive anatomy, making moods and wacky faces! Showing feeling through pose! Next level upgrade awesome lettering skills!
Week 4 – – Tricks for Storytelling! Ace ways to make your comic POP! Exploring different kinds of panel design (the little boxes that make up comics) to boost your storytelling skills, and a look at Wally Wood’s ’22 panels that always work’!
Week 5 – – Monster mash-up!
Week 6 – – Comic Club Spooktacular!

Week 7 – – Skateboard / T-Shirt / trainers / hoodies / mug designing!
Week 8 – – Fairy tale characters in cartoon style!
Week 9 – – Mythical Creatures from ancient times!
                                                                                                                                                                                         

Perfect for 7 – 13 year olds and beyond – grown-ups may wish to accompany younger kids – I adapt the session towards the needs of participants.

Bespoke printable worksheets reinforcing the topics covered, or providing super-fun drawing practice will be provided with Zoom Codes for each session. All you need is a pencil, paper, optional black outliner, and plenty of imagination!

Join bestselling cartoonist and super-experienced tutor James Parsons on Zoom for a 9 week course in the popular manga/anime style of comic art. Every Wednesday at 930am, I’ll be guiding you through all the essential tricks required to create amazing manga artwork – from kawaii and chibis to classic characters, and more realistically proportioned figures. If you attended the previous manga course this will be entirely fresh perspectives and workshops! Some sessions will explore manga and create artwork themed to different genres, so we’ll be learning about Yokai (magical mythical creatures), Isekai (transported to magical worlds), Mecha (giant robots), or Cookery Manga for example! Other sessions will look at expressive poses and character drawing/design, often using fan favourites of the participants!

Perfect for 8 years to teenage – grown-ups are welcome to accompany younger kids.

Printable worksheets reinforcing the topics covered and providing super-fun drawing practice will be provided with zoom codes for each session. All you need is a pencil, paper, optional black outliner and colours, and plenty of imagination!

Workshop content will be devised nearer to the time, and is often be influenced by the requests and interests of the young artists… but this hypothetical course structure should give you an idea of how things might run. 

Week 1 – – Kawaii Klassiks – adorable anthropomorphic cuteness culture explored!
Week 2 – – Chibis forever, classic characters, as requested by the young people! (super-cute character creation)
Week 3 – – Manga explorers – creating artworks linked to a genre! Isekai!
Week 4 – – Yokai! We’ll be drawing mysterious Japanese folk creatures, and learning about their strange histories!
Week 5 – – Manga explorers – creating artwork linked to a genre! Mecha!
Week 6 – – More realistic manga character (dynamic upgrades for realistically-proportioned figure drawing and character design tricks)
Week 7 – – Hair, eyes, hands…. tricky tips and unbeatable upgrades!
Week 8 – – Classic characters, as requested by the young people!
